Subacoustech Diver Helmet Noise
Noise exposure at work can lead to decreased efficiency in the short term, which may in itself be hazardous, and deafness in the longer term. Single exposures to loud noise at 130 dB and over can cause immediate lasting damage (traumatic hearing injury) and long term exposure to levels over 85 dB(A) cause deafness in the long term (Noise Induced Hearing Loss, or NIHL). Most Western countries have legislation that limits the amount of noise an employee can be exposed to over a work period. If these levels are exceeded then all possible measures must be taken to reduce the amount of noise in the workplace. Failing this, the time of exposure must be reduced in proportion to the degree by which the stipulated levels have been exceeded. While airborne noise assessment is relatively straight forward, reliable measurements of noise in diving environments are much more challenging, because of the wide range of temperatures, pressures and noise levels that can be encountered and the fact that the equipment has to operate in both wet and dry conditions, and in flow. People working underwater are often exposed to high levels of sound, particularly those in the construction and oil and gas industries. Subacoustech have therefore developed a package that is able to measure and assess noise exposure in these environments to ensure the safety of professional divers. The Subacoustech Helmet Noise system combines purpose built, highly accurate, calibrated electronic measurement equipment with a low noise hydrophone traceable to international standards. Used in conjunction with the Subacoustech software package the system can quickly and easily be deployed to ensure the safety of divers in the potentially harsh underwater environment.
The Helmet Noise software package is supplied with the necessary hardware and provides data acquisition and archiving with clear on screen readouts so that noise levels can be monitored in real time by the Health and Safety Officer on site.
